From the Editor
From bugs to books, we have something for every kind of art lover this issue.
Yes, bugs. I admit I'd never heard of rove beetles before Galleries West contributor Nicole Bauberger dropped me a note about an exhibition in Whitehorse this spring. But when she sent more details, I was fascinated. Canadian artist Luann Baker-Johnson and biologist Benoit Godin's Aleocharinae: An Entomologist and an Artist, is on view at the Yukon Arts Centre Gallery for a few more days, until May 23.
Then check out the latest in our series on art schools in Canada. Longtime Galleries West staff member and contributor Marianne Elder shares some thoughts on how to choose the art school that's right for you, whether you're straight out of high school or a recent retiree planning your next adventure.
Next, we head to the West Coast, where John Thomson takes us to Lucy Raven: Murderers Bar, on view at the Vancouver Art Gallery through Sept. 28. The show, he notes, is the largest Lucy Raven exhibition in Canada to date and was curated by former VAG CEO and executive director Anthony Kiendl.
Back to the prairies, where Manitoba painter Tim Schouten’s latest exhibition, The Island Lake Paintings, will open May 29 at Soul Gallery in Winnipeg. It is inspired by a trip that Schouten made to a Treaty 5 memorial gathering on Manitoba's Linklater Island in 2024.
Are you looking for something new to read? Katherine Ylitalo loved Cellophane Bricks, A Life in Visual Arts, a book she describes as delivering "a long overdue refresh to art writing."
Finally, do you have a special work of art in your house? Maybe something a family member made, or passed on to you, or something you bought from a favourite artist?
Or, are you downsizing and need to figure out what to do with your collection? Drop me a note; I would love to hear about it.
And as always, thanks for reading.
