The Richmond Art Gallery in Richmond, BC, will feature Restless by Nature: Mary Sui Yee Wong, 1990s to the present.
Curated by Zoë Chan, the show — part of the Capture Photography Festival — will take place April 12 to June 8.
Born in Hong Kong, Mary Sui Yee Wong grew up in Vancouver and moved to Montreal to study at Concordia University. She completed both a bachelor of fine arts and a master of fine arts there and is now part of the Concordia Fine Arts faculty.
As a practicing artist, she works in sculpture, photography, video and costume. The new show will culminate with a performance-based work looking at the rise of anti-Asian violence that followed the Covid-19 pandemic.
“As an artist there are certain things that I try to do which have more to do with raising awareness, giving voice to a community, and giving voice to issues. It is definitely culturally specific,” she told the publication ArtsHelp four years ago.
“Acceptance of difference and acceptance of diversity is how we can break down the colonialistic gaze, the colonialistic ideology that everyone has to be the same by living the Western way and perspective.” ■
