A major part of the West Coast art scene until his death in December 2004, Peter Aspell is featured in a new exhibition, Colossus, on now through Feb. 22 at Gallery Jones in Vancouver.
“Aspell was controversial, a risk taker, and incapable of compromise,” according to the gallery team.
“Aspell adopted his own primitive, expressionist style of painting and his legacy lives on through his surreal aesthetic, his iconic subjects, and his evocative and complex use of colour.”
Born and raised in Vancouver, Aspell studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art + Design) from 1937 to 1941, followed by the Academie de Ghent in Belgium in 1945. (He later taught at the Vancouver School of Art from 1948 to 1970.) Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris chose Aspell's painting for a show of young Canadian artists in Prague after the Second World War. His work is found in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Vancouver Art Gallery. ■
