One of Canada's top painters, Ron Moppett turns 80 this year and he's marking the year with a celebration and exhibition of new and recent works, including several from his collaborative series FrAmEd with fellow painter John Hall.
The exhibition, ALBUM: Ron Moppett @80, opens March 22 from 1:30 to 5 pm and runs through April 26 at TrepanierBaer Gallery in Calgary.
Born in England, Moppett — who was awarded the prestigious Gershon Iskowitz Prize in 1997 — studied at the Alberta College of Art (now the Alberta University of the Arts) and the Instituto de Allende in Mexico. His work is found in major public and private collections around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, the Art Gallery of Alberta, Glenbow and the MacKenzie Art Gallery.
“Ron's work has the depth and confidence of a senior artist, but with the joie de vivre of a younger one,” says gallery owner Yves Trépanier. “He is one of the best colourists around.” ■
ALBUM: Ron Moppett @80 takes place March 22 through April 26. On March 22 at 1:30 pm, Moppett and his son, artist Damian Moppett, will take visitors on a walk around the show.
