Audrey Capel Doray died, age 93, on April 11, 2025 in Salmon Arm, British Columbia.
Born in Montreal, Que. in 1931, Doray studied art with John Lyman and Arthur Lismer at McGill University and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1952. She then studied etching at Atelier 17 in Paris with Stanley Hayter and printmaking, before marrying fellow artist and medical illustrator Victor Doray in 1956. They moved to Vancouver the following year.
“Here, she became an influential artist and educator — teaching at the Vancouver School of Art from 1959 to 1961 and contributing as an active member of the artists’ organization Intermedia in the late 1960s and early 1970s,” according to a statement from the Vancouver Art Gallery.
A sculptor, filmmaker, painter, graphic artist and installation artist, Doray exhibited her work widely, including shows at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver's Bau-Xi Gallery and Toronto's Jerrold Morris Gallery. She also was part of the 6th Biennial Exhibition of Canadian Painting at the National Gallery of Canada in 1965. Her serigraph Diamond is part of the National Gallery of Canada and the Tate Gallery London collection.
“Audrey Capel Doray leaves behind a legacy of artistic curiosity, fearless experimentation and enduring influence,” reads the Vancouver Art Gallery statement.
