The Calgary Stampede has unveiled three new artworks by Alberta artist Jason Carter.
The Buffalo, The Horse, and The Bull — the three new works — will be on view permanently at each of Stampede Park’s three primary entrances.
Carter, a graduate of NAIT and MacEwan University, has art at both the Calgary and Edmonton international arports, as well as in public and private collections around the world. He was the only Alberta artist with a solo exhibition at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
“It’s been an honour to be selected as the artist for the Calgary Stampede’s entrance art features,” Carter said in a news release.
“I was inspired by the concept of the ‘herd’ and selected these animals, which I felt figuratively embodied the Calgary Stampede’s western heritage and sense of gathering, while more literally capturing the Stampede’s celebration of agriculture, Western events and cultures.”
Installation of the new work will begin in April 2025 and will be completed in June 2025. When installed, the largest of the Buffalo will stand just over 19 feet tall; the smallest will be nearly 11 feet. The large horse will be just under 21 feet; the smaller horse will be just under 11 feet.
“Art has always been an important part of Stampede history, and we are excited to add Jason Carter’s pieces to the collection of artwork we currently have on Stampede Park,” said Neil MacKimmie, the Calgary Stampede’s volunteer Public Art Committee chair, in the release.
“During the selection process, we were incredibly impressed with the boldness of Carter’s pieces in their proposed setting, the consideration for the day and night representation and the resonance with our Stampede values.”
