Jennifer Dickson has died at the age of 88.
One of Canada’s preeminent printmakers and photographers, Dickson built a reputation around the world for her meticulously hand-tinted etchings, prints, photographs and watercolours.
Born in South Africa in 1936, she studied at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art at the University of London from 1954 to 1959 before moving to Canada in 1969. During her lifetime, she had more than 60 solo exhibitions in six countries and more than 400 group exhibitions. In 1995, she was named to the Order of Canada and in 1988, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta. She was a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, and she published her final book of poetry and images, Poems for a Phantom Lover, in 2023 at the age of 86. Her work is represented by Wallace Galleries in Calgary.
