The Kingston Prize has partnered with Donville Creative, WORK BOOK and Goose Lane Editions to release a new book, The Kingston Prize: Canada’s Portrait Competition.
Scheduled for release in February 2025, it features all the winners and finalists from all 20 years that the award has been presented. It will retail for $50. Robyn Lew and Jim Shedden are the co-publishers, while Jason Donville and Gayle Barr are the Kingston Prize co-chairs.
The Kingston Prize is a biennial competition that began in 2015. It aims to "encourage and reward the creation of contemporary portraits by Canadian artists, to promote Canadian artists through competition, and over time to develop an historical record of Canadians, by Canadians," according to the Kingston Prize website.
Shaun Downey was the 2023 winner of the $20,000 Kingston Prize for his portrait, Near the Elevator. Michael Goodson was awarded the 2023 Kingston Prize People’s Choice Award; he received $1,000.
