Mona Filip Named As Contemporary Calgary Chief Curator
Mona Filip has been named as Contemporary Calgary’s new chief curator.
Originally from Romania, Filip holds a bachelor of fine arts from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, as well as a master of fine arts from SUNY at Buffalo. She curated the first Canadian exhibitions of international artists Raphaël Zarka, Christian Hidaka, Sigalit Landau and Isabel Rocamora.
Most recently the director/curator of Koffler Gallery at Koffler Arts in Toronto, Filip began her new role on March 3.
“The vision and aspirations of this vibrant institution deeply resonate with my steadfast belief in the transformative power of art in fostering critical thinking and social change,” said Filip in a news release. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues and the artists of the region and beyond.”
“Mona’s authenticity, passion for contemporary art and artists, and confidence deeply impressed the selection committee,” said David Leinster, Contemporary Calgary’s CEO, in the release. “Her vision for a curatorial program that is rigorous and deeply connected to both our building’s history and the broader cultural landscape will play a pivotal role in cementing our identity as a significant Canadian institution.”
The news comes just days after Contemporary Calgary announced it is receiving major funding from the provincial government for its capital renovation and expansion project.
