Power Plant Announces Its Independence From Harbourfront Centre

The Power Plant
Toronto’s Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery is separating from the Harbourfront Centre, according to a story in the Globe and Mail.
“And it’s launching a three-year campaign to sustain itself as it loses hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of annual funding and shared services from the complex,” according to the newspaper.
Harbourfront will continue to give Power Plant free rent, maintenance and security, but the gallery will no longer get cash from the centre, which has been experiencing financial issues. Last year Power Plant received $380,000 from Harbourfront. Phone costs and IT will also no longer be shared with Harbourfront.
“We’re quite confident we can make this work, and Harbourfront Centre will continue to be an essential supporter of Power Plant because of the facilities,” Power Plant executive director Carolyn Vesely told the newspaper.
The Power Plant has already had to cut back its programming schedule from three shows per season to two. New shows by Toronto artists Emmanuel Osahor and Shelagh Keeley are scheduled to open next week.
