Artist Statement: Father’s Day is a photo-based exploration of the absence of male role models in my family and the impact it had on my life and my art. I was inspired by a Father’s Day card my son gave me several years ago, expressing feelings I could never have expressed to my father. I was also inspired by my 2002 curatorial project – Where Are the Children? Healing the Legacy of the Residential Schools – and the legacy of broken family ties and role models within indigenous communities in the wake colonialism. My question is: Did our ancestors have a special day for Fathers?

Curtis, Festival America, Vincennes - Paris, France, Departure Points, Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta. He has also been in many group shows, including UNMASKING: Arthur Renwick, Adrian Stimson, Jeff Thomas, Canadian Cultural Centre, Paris, France, American West. Compton Verney, Warwickshire, England and About Face: Native American Self-Portraits, Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1998, he was awarded the Canada Council’s prestigious Duke and Duchess of York Award in Photography and in 2003, inducted to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art.
Raven Brings the Light
Stephen Foster
Dates: Friday, April 27 to Saturday, June 23, 2012
Artist Talk at 7pm | Opening Reception at 8pm, Friday, April 27, 2012
Location: Urban Shaman’s Marvin Frances Media Gallery (203-290 McDermot Ave)
Artist Statement: The Raven and the story of how he brings the light to world is an iconic north west coast story that has several variations and at its essence is a story about coming into consciousness. This video and sound installation is an attempt to capture the moment of Raven’s childhood when the world was still dark. Before Raven steals the light and shatters the darkness he is a child in the house of an old man that keeps all the light of the universe in a box inside many boxes. Raven tricks the man into releasing the light.
Biography: Stephen Foster is a video and electronic media artist of mixed Haida and European background. His work tends to deal with issues of indigenous representation in popular culture through personal narrative and documentary. He has exhibited both internationally and nationally and has lectured publicly on interactive documentary, community-based research and Canadian contemporary indigenous art. Foster is currently an Associate Professor in the Creative Studies Dept. at the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus where he instructs courses dedicated to video production, digital media and visual theory.
