The AGSM has hosted an annual members exhibition since 2004, making this the 17th instalment of the popular, community-driven event. Limited only by wall space, this exhibition is built from an open submission for anyone with an AGSM membership that was in good standing as of October 31, 2021.
Because the discount on art courses is the favourite benefit of membership for many, and with the AGSM’s school put on pause through the Covid-19 pandemic, curator Lucie Lederhendler wasn’t sure that members would have enough recent work to fill up a show, but her concerns were unwarranted.
Kevin Conlin, who has run the Gallery’s adult programs for more than 20 years, is not surprised. “Whatever else the pandemic gave us, it gave us a lot of downtime,” Conlin said. “For a lot of our community, forcing them to stay home is giving them the space to let their inner creative out.”
As artwork continues to be delivered, the AGSM is expecting over 85 works of art from 39 artists, most of whom are local to the AGSM.
Two artist talks will be held virtually through the AGSM’s online platforms. The first, at 7 PM on Tuesday, December 7, will feature artists Jan Brancewicz, Kay V Chapman, Forouzandeh Kasrai, and Curt Shoultz.
The second, at 1 PM on Friday, December 10, will feature artists Sarah Collard, Kurt Noll, TJ Southam, and Richelle Treloar.
A reception will be held on Thursday, December 2 at 7:00PM, which will celebrate the unveiling of the Members Show as well as Lost and Otherwise Found, an exhibition of paintings by Diarmuid “Derry” Decter, which has been open to the public since October 28 and will run through December. Supplemental events are supported by the generosity of the Whitehead Foundation. Where artists have opted to sell their work, they will be on sale starting on December 2.
While the gallery is open to all fully vaccinated individuals, unvaccinated youth under 12 may attend if they are accompanied by a fully vaccinated guardian, masks and social distancing measures will be in place.
