2021 YEG A + F WIKIPEDIA EDIT-A-THON GOES VIRTUAL
Join us as we write queer art history into Wikipedia!
Wikipedia’s diversity problem is well documented. Although the reasons for the diversity issues are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not. Content is skewed and there are significant information gaps on what is arguably the world's most visited reference site. But there is good news: Anyone can help fix this, and it's easy!
Inspired by the Mitchell Art Gallery's exhibition Dress & Escapism: Performance of Identity through Drag and Burlesque Costume, YEG Art + Feminism 2021 is focusing on writing queer art history into Wikipedia.
The goal of these events is to collectively and purposefully improve the quality and quantity of Wikipedia entries that reflect more queer art histories. We are thinking broadly and want to work on creating more pages that capture the rich history of LGBTTQIA+ visual artists, musicians, authors, burlesque, drag queens and activists in Edmonton, Alberta and environs.
Drop in for one event or the entire series, everyone is welcome and no prior experience with Wikipedia is needed. Let’s make some change!
This event was organized in a collaborative effort by the MAG, MacEwan University's Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications, MacEwan University Library, University of Alberta Library, and the Alberta University of the Arts.
WIKI RESEARCH SPRINT
Wednesday, March 17, 1 - 2:30 p.m.
Join us for our second YEG A + F event in our Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Series: a virtual research sprint to build on the crowdsourced list and identify sources that can be used to create and edit the Wikipedia pages identified in our first event.
The afternoon will begin with a short lecture on Wikipedia’s verifiability policy, what Wikipedia means when it asks for a "reliable source" and assist you in finding good quality sources about our local arts community. This talk will be followed by a group activity in which participants will select topics or pages from the crowdsourced list and start filling out provided research templates.
This collaborative event is welcome to anyone who is interested and will be a unique opportunity to research alongside other participants and learn about sources covering local arts. No prior knowledge or experience is required to participate!
WIKIPEDIA EDIT-A-THON
Wednesday, March 24, 1 - 4 p.m.
It’s time for the main and final event in the YEG Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Series: a three-hour virtual, drop in edit-a-thon where we edit together and build upon the previous two sessions.
After a 20-minute training refresh session, participants will gather in breakout rooms on Zoom and we will use the breakout room to put their digital skills into practice in a supportive setting and work collaboratively to improve representation online for the benefit of people everywhere. There are several ways in which participants can contribute in addition to writing such as adding citations, doing additional research, grammar edits, etc.
No prior knowledge or experience is required to participate! We’ll provide you with all the tools and assistance you need to become an editor and contributor to Wikipedia.
