Good Grief is a space for Jake Kimble to process his loss and to grieve. A multidisciplinary Chipewyan (Dëne Sųłıné) artist from Treaty 8 territory in the Northwest Territories, his practice utilizes photography and self-portrait. Using imagery of his whole body, he unpacks his life and experiences to understand his past and present.
Kimble’s grief was sparked during the spring and summer of 2023. His brother passed in a tragic accident and shortly afterwards wildfires decimated the lands and communities where he grew up. The scale and intensity of the loss brought a grief unlike anything he’d experienced before.
Kimble felt called to returned home, to be in the places where his memories lived despite the loss. He spent a month in the winter of 2023/2024 in Hay River and the Hamlet of Enterprise, NWT, setting up a studio in his dad’s machine garage.
His works are a way for Kimble to see his grief take up real space outside of mind and heart. The photographs hold at their core Kimble’s maxim that if something is mentionable, it is manageable, even if it is one small step at a time.
