A Sublime Vernacular: The Landscape Paintings of Levine Flexhaug is the first overview of the art and career of Levine Flexhaug (1918–1974). An itinerant artist who turned out endless variations of essentially the same idyllic mountain-lake scene, Flexhaug made and sold his paintings on the spot in national parks, resorts, department stores, restaurants, and bars across western Canada from the late 1930s to the 1960s. Painting a landscape fantasy for a society that had been shaped by the Dust Bowl and Depression, he transformed a generic image into paintings of richness and surprising invention. Curated by Nancy Tousley and Peter White, the exhibition includes more than 450 of examples of his work.

Flexie! All the Same and All Different is a feature-length documentary made in association with A Sublime Vernacular: The Landscape Paintings of Levine Flexhaug by Calgary filmmakers Gary Burns and Donna Brunsdale. The film not only tells the story of a little known artist but in its investigation of how people respond to the paintings and what they mean to them, is also a fascinating reflection on both the nature of art and the meaning of place.

The accompanying book is now available at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie. Published on the occasion of the first comprehensive exhibition of his paintings, A Sublime Vernacular: The Landscape Paintings of Levine Flexhaug is a 160-page book that features 121 colour reproductions of Flexhaug’s paintings, historic photographs, interpretative essays, and an extensive chronology of the artist’s life.
