Adrian Stimson, "School Days," Invitation
April 28-July 7th 2017 Reception and artist talk April 29
Solo exhibition by critically acclaimed artist Adrian Stimson. Stimson’s School Days, a critical look at the residential school system and its effects on the Canadian imaginary and the longstanding effects on Indigenous people in Canada. Recently I had a conversation with a friend of mine and the legacy of resilience, the power of blood memory and in this series we are a witness to the resilience of Indigenous people and the power to ignite, burn away, destroy in totality the inherited inter-generational trauma caused by those who implemented this particular institution of power over the most vulnerable of our society-children.
The last residential school operated by the Canadian government, Gordon Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan, was closed in 1996. It is estimated that the number of residential schools reached its peak in the early 1930s with 80 schools and more than 17,000 enrolled students.
