At Lattimer Gallery, the past five holiday seasons have begun with an exciting Charity Bentwood Box Silent Auction, with each year’s donations surpassing the last. What begins as a blank cedar bentwood box is transformed into a beautiful work of art, all in the name of charity. We’ve seen memorable pieces like Steve Smith’s Raven’s in Nest and Clint Work’s Boxed Lunch, and every year we longingly wait, much like children on Christmas Eve, to see all of the extraordinary creations of both emerging and established Northwest Coast artists.
Last year, we were pleased to announce a three year partnership with Urban Native Youth Association. UNYA is a Vancouver organization which has been providing 21 prevention-focused programs and services to Native Youth since 1988 to help meet their immediate and longer-term needs. To date, we have raised a total of $34,500 for Aboriginal organizations and we hope to eclipse $50,000 with this year’s bids.
100% of all bids will be donated to UNYA. In addition, this year we are excited to have matching donation offers from a number of organizations and individuals including: Precision Graphics and Yukiko Matsu-Pissot.
Between November 24th and December 8th, you will have the chance to bid on these one-of-a-kind pieces via phone, email or in person. The boxes can be viewed on our website with their current accompanying bids beginning November 20th. Participating artists include Richard Sumner (Kwakwaka’wakw), Bradley Hunt (Heiltsuk), Dean Hunt (Heiltsuk), Phil Gray (Tsimshian/Cree), James Michels (Métis/Cree), Justin Rivard (Cree), Steve Smith (Kwakwaka’wakw), Nathan Wilson (Haisla), Clint Work (Kwakwaka’wakw) and Don Yeomans (Haida) among others.
We invite you to take part in this exciting charity event this holiday season. Please join us for a reception concluding the final evening of bidding, December 8th, from 5pm to 8pm. The boxes will be on display and participating artists for our annual charity event will be in attendance.
