Courtesy of the Gallery.
Reception: December 10th, 4pm-6pm.
For the past fifteen years Lattimer Gallery has organized an event to help support the Urban Native Youth Association, a Vancouver organization which has been providing prevention-focused programs and services to Native youth since 1988. UNYA’s work includes advocacy, community development, and providing youth with meaningful opportunities to provide input into their programs and services.
All of the work in the creation of these small cedar boxes is donated: the boxes are steam-bent and constructed by Métis/Cree artist James Michels; the promotion and collected funds is donated by Lattimer Gallery; and all the artwork is donated by the artists. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Urban Native Youth Association.
This is the sixteenth year of Lattimer Gallery’s Annual Charity Bentwood Boxes event. What started out as a spontaneous idea to sell a few boxes for donated funds back in 2006 has turned into a major fundraising event that has raised over $700,000.00 CAD for local Indigenous organizations. Our annual event begins with Métis/Cree artist James Michels creating the blank steam-bent boxes which are then distributed to various Indigenous artists. Eleven years ago, we were pleased to announce a partnership with the Urban Native Youth Association, a Vancouver organization which has been providing prevention-focused programs and services to Native youth since 1988. We now assign 100% of all proceeds from our charity events to UNYA. Last year, we raised $81,748.40 CAD bringing our total raised for UNYA to over $700,000.
Between November 26th and December 10th, you will have the chance to bid on these one-of-a-kind pieces via phone, email, or in person. Bids start at $200.00 CAD and go up from there in increments of $100.00 CAD. The boxes can be viewed on our website with their current accompanying bids starting on the 26th. Participating artists include Corey Bulpitt, KC Hall, Maynard Johnny Jr, Sharifah Marsden, Steve Smith, among others.
We invite you to take part in our fun charity event. During the auction’s final few hours on December 10th, our phone lines will be constantly monitored to accept all final bids. In addition, we will donate 10% of all sales made on December 10th to UNYA.
