ANTHONY REDPATH: DISTILLED
to
Paul Kuhn Gallery 724 11 Ave SW, Calgary, Alberta T2R 0E4
OPENING: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2:00 - 5:00 PM
Paul Kuhn Gallery is pleased to present DISTILLED, an exhibition of new photographs by Vancouver artist, Anthony Redpath. Mining a contemporary landscape that is rooted in our industrial history, Redpath positions his lens at an unnerving distance that disorients his viewer as it distills its subject.
“Striving for ultimate graphic simplicity can help communicate an idea in the most arresting way,” Redpath states. He masters the technical process in order that “the visual edges within the photographs are just as sharply resolved as the brush strokes on large-scale paintings”.
Redpath frames industrial facades, most notably to Bernd and Hilla Becher’s “typologies,” black–and–white photographic grids of industrial structures, Andreas Gursky’s “visual structures that appear to dominate the real events happening in his pictures”, the rich textural detail of Gerhard Richter’s scraped paintings, and the graphic industrial depictions by Lewis Baltz in “New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape”, while moving his subject to the verge of abstraction.
Seductive to the viewer at a distance, Redpath's highly detailed compositions, at a closer viewing, conjure themes of perception, industry, socio-politics and the environment.
The artist will be visiting Calgary and attend his opening.
