Michael Joyal, "It's just another place where I don't sleep," 2018
watercolour, ink, acrylic, 14" x 11"
Michael Joyal's, The Antler Girls, is a series of figurative works that explore themes between male/ female relationships and feminist theory through an imagined Amazonian society of women living within reach of the Lagimodière-Gaboury Park in Winnipeg.
The portraits, illustrated in ink, watercolour and acrylic, are of the artist's various female friends who he has given different styles of antlers and painted in different park like nature scenes. The size and shape of the antlers determine an imaginary fantasy hierarchical role in this mythical dream like society where traditional male symbols of power are used to represent a shift to the feminine strength. This series explores a relationship between mediums with paint colours sharing the space with pen and ink. The figures, background and environment combine a new body of work shown here for the first time by artist and self proclaimed feminist, Michael Joyal.
