Vasalisa A In 2013, the MacKinnon household launched Art Tuesdays—as envisioned by Olivia MacKinnon—a weekly gathering of individuals wishing to explore creative potentials or engage in their own artistic projects, a kind of Gertrude Stein salon. With music in the background, an ever-filled punchbowl and snacks, people might sit and hang out, or engage in artistic creation. With participants coming on a more regular or drop-in basis, according to individual desire, the informal group ranged from five to thirty people on any given evening, the most well-attended event being a house concert featuring international singer/guitarist Daniel Champagne.
Over the course of almost three years, art forms explored have included doodling, drawing, painting, sewing, video editing, guitar and piano playing, singing, cooking and more. Out of Art Tuesdays, and with the warmth and enthusiasm of guests, host Margaret Shaw-MacKinnon created twenty-eight paintings inspired by that most humble and remarkable bird—the chicken—and had a lively and well-attended art show on this plucky theme in December, 2014 at the picturesque St. Norbert Arts Centre.
Island BThis November, Art Tuesdays participants are delighted to bring to the public their first collective art show at cre8ery, in the heart of the exchange, with the wonderful support of Jordan Miller. Join us for an enchanting opening night on Thursday, November 12th, from 7 to 10, with music and food, and a range of intriguing and varied artworks, ranging from realist to abstract, in mixed media, to appreciate and/or purchase—great gifts for Christmas or Hanukkah.
We thought the perfect title for our show would be Approach, as the Art Tuesdays’ way is to be involved in the artistic process, never arriving but always approaching the wild heart of the creative adventure.
BabayagaMargaret Shaw-MacKinnon, BFA Hons, MA, Painter, Writer
Margaret has been a long-time participant in the MB Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools program where she teaches story-writing and illustrating. Her children’s books include Pod the Wood Elf, Tiktala (recipient of the McNally Robinson Book for Young People Award 1997, and the Parent’s Choice Honor in the U.S.), and The Beech Nut of Big Water Beach (short-listed for the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award 2009). As student of literature and art, Margaret’s paintings rise out of a love of myth and story, as well as an appreciation of the narrative paintings of Botticelli, Blake, the Pre-Raphaelites, and more. Ultimately, Margaret believes that painting is about the intricacies of paint and the adventure of the blank canvas.
Artistic contributions for the show will come from Art Tuesdays participants out of a long list of emerging and established artists, offering up a fine array of artwork.
