Opening Reception Saturday, October 14th from 2 to 5 pm. Artist in Attendance.
In Aron Hill’s new exhibition at the Herringer Kiss Gallery, he presents paintings, textile and sculptural works that examine what it means to be within a particular settler lineage living in this particular place and time, what it means to care and exist creatively, and what it means to labor and make work. Dealing with notions of cultural identity, post-colonialism, and the differences between work and labour, Aron Hill combines craft and high art to pose questions about human value in a contemporary existence.
Aron Hill currently lives and works in Moh-kíns-tsis (Calgary), traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. He graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. He then completed his MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Aron’s work has evolved into installation based projects using traditional drawing and painting methods alongside formal sculptural elements, text based work and textiles. His influences includes Canadian artists Dayna Danger and Luanne Martineau as well as Adrian Piper, Yinka Shoninbare, Gilbert and George and Theaster Gates. Aron has exhibited internationally and occasionally lectures and writes.
