ASK YOUR BEST - ALANA BARTOL
THURSDAY JULY 27TH, 7 - 10PM
Dowsing or ‘water-witching’ is a form of divination used to locate ground water, buried metals or ores, oil, archeological ruins, and information. Though it has often been associated with witchcraft and the occult, dowsing has been used for prospecting ores and water in Northern Europe and elsewhere since the 15th century.
Dowsing is inquiry; it involves asking questions. The rod’s ensemble of responses is limited to “yes,” “no,” or “unclear”. Learning how and when to ask questions is integral.
On July 27th you are invited to participate in a one-on-one dowsing session with artist Alana Bartol. Sessions will be limited to five minutes. First come first serve.
This event is free, participatory, and open to the public, presented as part of HOT OIL, M:ST's third annual fundraiser for the performative arts. Donations will be accepted at the event. For more information on the fundraiser and to donate online go to: www.mstfestival.org/hotoil/.
ARTIST BIOALANA BARTOL comes from a long line of water witches. In her art practice, she employs performative strategies, such as walking and dowsing, as creative methods for understanding connections between bodies, natural resources, and histories in everyday environments. Through public workshops, performances, and dowsing walks, she invites others to engage in exercises of trust, chance, and curiosity, while communicating with unseen forces that shape our world.
