Ava P Christl, "Boreal: New Paintings from the Boreal Forest," 2022
Ava P Christl’s new show Boreal: New Paintings from the Boreal Forest opens on May 3, 2022 at the Yukon Artists at Work Gallery in Whitehorse.
“Boreal is the beginning of a much bigger project about the circumpolar boreal forest,” Christl said. “The full body of work will consist of paintings, drawings and sculptures that address issues and ideas about the trees, forest floors, lakes, marshes and wetlands that make up this vast and important ecosystem in northern Canada and across the circumpolar north.”
Christl’s work is located at the intersection of art and ecology, nature and spirit. She makes paintings about place, wilderness, and our human relationship to the living land. Her work deals with landscape and memory; grief, loss and recovery; longing and belonging; and the concept of entropy.
Christl was born on Vancouver Island, grew up in northern B.C. and spent 25 years north of 60 in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and the Yukon. She has recently returned to the Yukon after 15 years in B.C. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (painting) from NSCAD University and has exhibited her work across northern and western Canada for more than 30 years. Her paintings are held in private and public collections throughout North America including the Yukon’s Permanent Collection and the Art Bank of Canada.
An opening reception planned for May 7 from 4-6 p.m. Music will be provided by Steve Slade. Please wear a mask.
