Exhibition Evite, Artwork by Jenny Hawkinson
The Fort Gallery is pleased to present Vancouver-based artist Jenny Hawkinson’s new exhibition Beyond Barrier, opening July 3.
In a world that is often bitterly divided—from border walls to partisan politics—Hawkinson’s multimedia artworks extend gentleness and humanity to these conversations. Hawkinson painstakingly embroiders graffiti text found in her Downtown Eastside neighborhood onto lace handkerchiefs and creates rubbings from words collected on the streets of London. She wallpapers the gallery with hand-pulled prints of fences and lace—challenging the viewer to consider what divides us.
Using materials and images from the domestic sphere—lace, embroidery, stitching—Hawkinson brings intimacy and personal connection to our most divisive social and political issues. In the midst of difference and division she asks us to consider how we might make a home together.
An opening reception will be held July 5th, 7-9pm. On July 26, 7-9pm, the gallery will host a concert with jazz musician Gord Edmunds. All are welcome to attend these events
