Benjamin Oswald is an Edmonton-based contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor. He earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Alberta, and recently had the opportunity to study with British ceramicist Sasha Wardell in her Wiltshire studio in UK, and explore industrial design processes in slip casting porcelain. Over his years of work, he has learned to think through his hands, and his work in ceramic art and sculpture shows a process of materializing ideas, shapes, and the interactions between objects and space.
Oswald’s entire oeuvre in ceramics falls into several categories, there are other works (both wheel-thrown and hand-made) which were created for nearly minimalist decoration and, finally, there are ceramic sculptures: both figurative and abstract – where the medium was used as a means to an end.
Presented in conjunction with Design Week at Harcourt House and 2018 Alberta Culture Days, this exhibition showcases an overview of Oswald’s prolific career as a ceramic artist, sculptor, and designer, and examines his works vis-a-vis international trends and directions in ceramic art.
The exhibition is jointly curated by Jacek Malec and Ruta Nichol of Harcourt House Artist Run Centre.
