New Westminster, New Media Gallery presents Brink, a group exhibition that explores notions of balance, causality and freedom of choice. Electronic media & robotic works as well as large-scale video installations come together in fragile equilibrium. There are tensions here; between freedom of choice and its repercussions; between the potential for success and failure. Tensions are presented as cyclical, perpetual and somehow inevitable. Historic games and poignant journeys relay a search for control and balance, or perhaps an attempt to recover something lost. Games are played out on both a grand and small scale; power struggles and symbiotic relationships are exposed. All manner of attractions, aggressions, collisions and threats of destruction seem imminent. Yet the viewer will also recognize tenacious and often impossible feats of balance, restraint and perseverance.
