New Canmore Studio & Gallery Tour Celebrates Local Artists
September 2012 – During the weekend of September 29 & 30, Canmore residents and visitors will be given a rare opportunity to peek inside professional artists’ studios, meet artists and walk through galleries featuring a great variety of local art.
In a town-wide event, 11 local artists will open their studio doors and nine Canmore galleries will host a weekend of art featuring some of the town’s most celebrated artists. Participants can walk, bike or drive to the 20 Canmore locations during the inaugural Canmore Studio & Gallery Tour.
The Tour showcases the talents of a wide variety of artists including those working in the areas of painting, blown glass, pottery, printmaking, photography, jewellery, stone carving, metal work, painted silk and bronze sculpture. Artists will be on hand to share their processes and talk about their inspiration. Some galleries will stage special attractions like demonstrations or plein air paint-outs.
“This is a unique chance to get inside several art studios over one weekend, plus visit a number of local galleries that feature Canmore talent,” says Kathy Foxcroft, owner of The Edge Gallery and the lead organizer for the event. “People love to connect with the creative process. This gives them the opportunity to see art up close, watch demonstrations, talk directly with artists and purchase unique local art. And, our participants get to share great art, which is what we are passionate about.”
The Canmore Studio & Gallery Tour takes place September 29 & 30, 2012 to tie into the larger Alberta Culture Days, a province-wide celebration of the arts. The Town of Canmore also celebrates the arts each year with an evening program called the “Mayor’s Spotlight on the Arts”, which will be held this year on Friday, September 28.
“A lot of visitors and locals know Canmore has a vibrant arts scene,” says Foxcroft. “We thought it would be great to create an event that makes this experience a little more personal by offering it over one weekend, and with a welcoming open-door policy. The Canmore Studio & Gallery Tour will be a dynamic event that has something for everyone.”
The Canmore Studio & Gallery Tour will take place:
Saturday, September 29, 2012: 10 am to 5 pm
Sunday, September 30, 2012: 10 am to 4 pm
Brochures with tour maps will be available in the coming weeks from the participants, and on the Tour’s Facebook site: www.facebook.com/CanmoreStudioAndGalleryTour
