Where Tiger Sleeps
Although Carl’s work almost always explores philosophical themes, this series endeavours to be without intellectual confrontation - to be void of the logical realm of logos. Carl’s particularly lush handling of paint, striking use of colour and unique rendering provide us access to where each painting emerged from, where the artist allows the work to, in his words, “speak through me rather than from me.” The result is a body of work with individually strong components - each painting drawing you into through its beauty and into its rich narrative. Carl White was born in Liverpool (UK) and studied painting, drawing and graphic design at the Alberta College of Art and Design (now AUArts) in Calgary. Known for his contemporary take on classical or Romantics ubjects and techniques, White’s work has been widely exhibited and collected both nationally and internationally for over twenty years, including more recently the Art Gallery of Grand Prairie, The Whyte Museum of the Rockies in Banff, and a highly successful debut solo exhibition in Lancaster, PA. He currently lives and works in Calgary wherehe is exceedingly active in the art community.
