Valerie Butters
“If there is a name I could give myself, my “brand” or “hashtag” would be Nouveau Automatist. The Automatists rocked my world - the idea that when a pen sits on paper, given enough time your arm will inevitably move on its own and make a mark. Flowers to me fill my inherent compulsion to design the world around me - they are a part of my reality and my circle of life.”
Valerie attended the Ottawa School of Art, and graduated from the three-year Comprehensive Arts Program at the Saidye Bronfman Centre where she was twice awarded art scholarships. Large formats and flamboyant style are the hallmarks of her critically acclaimed work. She now resides and paints in Pemberton, British Columbia with her husband and son.
Catherine Young Bates, RCA
“I paint the wind and the weather. I want the viewer to feel an exhilarating recognition - I’ve been there before - I’m standing right there! I use tube paints and pigment sticks, and draw through the paint to convey immediacy.” Catherine lives and works in Montreal. Born in Windsor, Ontario, she completed degrees at the University of Toronto, McGill, and the Maryland Institute of Art. She exhibits in the US and Canada, England and Japan, and her work is in major public and private collections. The RCA designation is awarded by the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, an honourary organization of over 790 established professional artists and designers across Canada.
