Clayton Anderson, "Mountain Stream III," 2020
acrylic on board, 20" x 16"
Madrona Gallery is pleased to present a solo-exhibition of new paintings by Clayton Anderson. This collection focuses on the artist’s exploration of more intimate locations and closely cropped compositions. As Anderson works through these paintings, he has made an effort to maintain a limited palette in order to prioritize value over hue, conveying even more drama in his designs. While this exhibition is about Anderson’s exploration of new spaces and his own process, it also celebrates his return to the Sunshine Coast where he previously lived for 25 years.
Artist’s Statement:
2021 marks 30 years since I’ve been painting fine art full-time. As such, a major element of this show is a reflection on the evolution of my style over the past decades. I decided to revisit old locations and apply new techniques - what might have been straight realism decades ago is now tinted by expressionism and experience.
These new paintings build on the artist’s decades of experience distilling landscapes down to their essentials. In these works, he has given great attention to form and light while simultaneously pulling away from individual detail. These give the paintings a stylized, minimal manner of brushwork juxtaposed with a near photo-realist handling of perspective and light. This highlights Anderson’s remarkable understanding of technique and creates intrigue for the viewer, keeping the eye active in discovering new elements and details over time.
Growing up in West Vancouver, Anderson’s influences are rooted in 20th century landscape painters who also were influenced by this region. Building on the foundation set by artists such as Emily Carr and Lawren Harris, Anderson works to communicate an experience that transcends the physical characteristics of place.
Anderson studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design and has devoted himself to painting since 1991. Over the past three decades, Anderson’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout Canada and can be found in collections around the globe.
