Day of the Dead - MOCA Calgary 2012
North of the Mexico-U.S. border, the end of October signifies a mad rush for candy and an explosion of all things spooky. South of that line, however, the big event is Dia de los Muertos.
On Nov. 1 and 2, families and friends gather to remember those they’ve lost. One of the traditions is to build an altar for the deceased, which includes personal possessions, flowers and sugar skulls. MOCA Calgary has partnered with the Mexican Consulate to present “Altar de Muertos” in honour of the Mexican observance of the Day of the Dead.
On Friday, the kickoff celebration (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.) will include a complimentary welcome cocktail, the Los Compadres food truck, live music by Los Majes (see and hear them in the video below) and a pop-up cocktail and wine bar by JustCocktails (cash bar).
The Altar will remain on display at MOCA Calgary until Nov. 10. The gallery is located at the end of Stephens Avenue by City Hall, 104, 800 Macleod Trail
