Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Deanna found a strong love for the visual arts at a young age. Whether it was drawing, jewelry making, painting or ceramics, all were of interest, so when the decision to attend the Alberta College of Art and Design (AUArts) was made, it was as an easy one.
Deanna quickly found a very unexpected love of glass. This medium held a unique set of challenges and was unlike any other she had experienced. Drawn to its vibrant colours, light transmissions, gestural qualities along with its functionality, Deanna approaches this material with curiosity and continuous amazement.
At her home studio in Canmore, Deanna’s focus shifts towards kiln formed glass, a multi-step process that involves building molds, working with clay, and manipulating glass though melting techniques in a kiln. Focusing on the specific qualities that glass possesses, light transmissions, colour & movement, surface treatment and texture, she has begun to explore adding supporting elements such as stone and wood into her sculptures.
