2D Maxine Wolodko: Acrylic paintings

Maxine’s paintings are of real places and things. When viewed together they show an idealized world of her own making. This world is a bit simpler, more colourful and slower to change. Her work reinforces ideas of simplicity and community, drawing attention to things that endure through time.

Maxine likes to capture the simple beautiful moments she witnesses in everyday life like a walk through the neighbourhood or a drive through the country. Painting is a way for her to fully appreciate these moments so they are not forgotten. Maxine’s work is influenced by her upbringing in rural Alberta. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Alberta.

3D Kenneth Mitchell: Model ships

Over fifty years of working at the Vancouver waterfront and seafaring to parts around the globe kindled a fascination for the beauty, function and variety of nautical vessels. This, along with an innate need to create steered him into the joys and challenges of model shipbuilding.

Kenneth enjoyed researching the history of shipping and boat design as well as replicas and the restoration of iconic vessels. To be accurate, he used drawings and photographs and with records and careful measurements each model was planned. Most elements were crafted himself or created from found materials. He creatively would use item such as coffee stir sticks as planks and tea and shoe polish as stains. Working from the inside out each model took about one year to complete. The Viking Longboat, 18th Century Frigate, Chinese Junk and the Mississippi River Boat will all be on display. He chose to create these particular vessels for the challenge, the beauty and the function of their designs.
