Dorothy Doherty’s exhibition Field Notes & Paper Diaries: Explorations in Paint and Paper was produced during the artist’s three-month residency at Leigh Square, the works are made of assorted papers collected by the artist over the years and take the form of collage on panel and small paper sculptures. The works are informed by the conditions emerging out of the fractured reality and fast pace of modern times, and the artist’s acute awareness of our over-consumption of paper products. The exhibition also includes a selection of paintings and other two-dimensional works from the artist’s collection.
Doherty is a Vancouver-based, mixed media artist working in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics. She received her art education from Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University) and Capilano University. She holds a Master of Arts in History of Art from University of Victoria. Her practice honours the materials with which she works, often revealing her process. Among many interests are ecological considerations, in particular the ever shrinking wilderness as a result of the growth of cities, and the resulting fallout of these conditions.
