Dorothy Knowles, "White Clover", 1989
acrylic on canvas, 72" x 108"
Dorothy Knowles, one of Canada’s most renowned landscape painters, celebrated her 90th Birthday in April. To commemorate this significant milestone in the life of such a truly great artist, we are delighted and honoured to present an exhibition featuring a diverse selection of her paintings in watercolour, acrylic, and oil.
For more than half a century, Dorothy Knowles has painted masterpieces across a range of media and scales. Her largescale paintings of the Canadian landscape have garnered considerable acclaim and are truly remarkable, enveloping the viewer and offering an immersive interaction with her vision of the landscape. Her more modestly scaled paintings are no less impressive, astonishing viewers with the artistry of her paint handling on surfaces as small as five by five inches. It is often a greater challenge to impress on the small scale rather than the large; yet, Knowles consistently leaves us awestruck.
When it comes to smaller scale works, one of Knowles' preferred mediums is watercolour. Like so many great Saskatchewan artists--Reta Cowley, Robert Hurley, and Ernest Lindner, to name a few--she has approached the medium with a seriousness and commitment equal to her work in oil and acrylic. Intimate and immediate, the luminous transparency of watercolour combined with the signature fluidity of Knowles' brush work suffuses each painting with a beautiful radiance.
Dorothy Knowles is recognized nationally and internationally for the outstanding quality of her landscape paintings. She has exhibited her work in galleries and museums throughout Canada and abroad for more than sixty years and her paintings have been collected by prestigious public institutions and museums, as well as corporations and individuals throughout the world.
Art Placement is tremendously honoured to have represented the work of Dorothy Knowles for nearly four decades and to present this latest exhibition, highlighting the artistic contributions and tremendous versatility of such a singular talent. We are particularly excited to unveil a series of brand new oil paintings, as well as select works in acrylic, oil, and watercolour spanning six decades of her career.
