JANE GATESON STATEMENT - "This exhibition is a collection of paintings about my impressions of Winnipeg over a lifetime. One of my first memories was the 1950 flood. Our street, near Truro Creek in St. James, was flooded. Some of the cars, and, (to my young eyes) some very exciting and brave teenagers on bikes, drove through anyway!
The suburbs were the setting for my career, marriage and young family. Then a move to Wolseley brought an especially rich community experience. Some of the paintings in this exhibition are of friends and their homes in Wolseley. A move to West Broadway introduced me to a different but equally vibrant community.
The North End stirs memories of visits to friends, exciting shopping trips and unfamiliar but delicious food.
I was introduced to the rich diversity of the inner city as a part time teacher/volunteer at Rossbrook House and surrounding schools.
As my art developed, a large part of my studio experience was on Jarvis St., and in St. Boniface and the Exchange district.
Streets, roads, businesses, galleries, parks, riverbanks, churches, schools, clinics, drop-in centres and neighbourhood resources, as well as my friends, my church and art Communities...
Winnipeg is my city!"
JEAN BACHYNSKY STATEMNT - The stone medium often conjures images of strength and solidity in a viewer’s mind. Words like hard… heavy… stark… cold… rough… dead… unchangeable are common descriptions.
Through my art, I seek to expand how we think about stone. Stone can be many of these things, but it is also responsive, smooth, translucent, eternal and beautiful.
I love working with stone to create soft feminine curves, conveying emotions through attitude and gesture. This material… this beautiful medium can be penetrated to generate light and can be shaped and textured, embodying softness and flow.
I love stone. It never fails to fascinate me. "
