to
Viewpoint Gallery 5205 48 Avenue (old Central Intermediate School), Red Deer, Alberta
Edith Chu, "Afternoon Break," 2019
watercolour, 24" X 26"
Opening reception: First Friday, Mar 4, artist in attendance. Gallery hours extended to 8:00 p.m. Artist’s talk at 6:30pm.
About the Exhibition: These are watercolour paintings of memories and experiences of Chu’s life in China from 2010-2015. Her time overseas allowed her to learn more about the culture and bridge the gap between her Canadian and Chinese identity.
Artist’s Statement: I am interested in preserving traditions and storytelling through simple materials and processes. Working from the photograph, layers of washes are applied in a meditative and methodical manner, and the muted colors communicate my faint memories and feelings of nostalgia. Using concrete methods and painting in a representational style is my way of staying grounded.
About the Artist: Edith Chu has a BFA and a B.Ed from the University of Alberta, and has been teaching in schools for the past 10 years. She is inspired by the artwork of the classical masters, architecture, and children's book illustrators.
