Owls, pheasants, quails, loons, eagles, swans, budgerigars, ducks, hedgehogs, raccoons, cats and gophers will descend upon the gallery for one day only as we present a remarkable collection of over 60 bird and other animal clay works by the late Victoria sculptor Edith Lansdowne. Included in this collection are three rare figurative works. The artist’s great attachment to her subjects is evident in the detail and charm that she imparted to her work.
Edith Lansdowne was born in Newchwang, China (now Yingkou) in 1907. She spent some years in Victoria as a young woman before returning to China where she met her husband, Ernest. Her son Fenwick Lansdowne was born in 1937 in Hong Kong. Edith and Fenwick were evacuated to Victoria during WWII. Ernest stayed behind and was subsequently interned by the Japanese for the duration of the war.
Edith started sculpting many years later, having painted since she was a young woman. Her sculptures quickly became popular locally and she spent many years working out of a studio at the back of her home on Pentland Road in Victoria, around the corner from Fenwick’s studio. She primarily sculpted birds and human figures which she remembered from her childhood spent in China.
