Erin Dixon’s show A Year of Collage: Making the Pieces Fit consists of a series of collage pieces that have helped Dixon endure the COVID pandemic.
“During the pandemic, we’ve all felt like the world is a puzzle we’re trying to figure out. To cope with it all, I’ve turned to collage to help me make sense of the chaos and keep myself grounded,” said Dixon. “I can’t change what is happening in the world right now, but turning to art in these upsetting times allows me to escape into my own made up worlds.”
The collage pieces focus on things that make the artist happy. One theme centres on imaginary places from Dixon’s dreams and subconscious; a second is Alice in Wonderland, an expression for feeling lost in an upside down world.
“Alice is a metaphor for me right now, and I put her into chaotic, but beautiful, sparkly landscapes,” Dixon said. “Alice sometimes has to fight off giant butterflies or she might just be taking a lovely walk through overgrown gardens and mid-century modern living rooms.”
