Ben Williamson's exhibition, "Vacationers," (opening Saturday, March 26), chronicles the travels of an unknown elderly couple who may or may not be with us. Using enigmatic photographs extracted from a collection of found documents, Williamson highlights the ‘snapshot' as nostalgic and old-fashioned, challenging photographic truthfulness, historical accuracy, and the reliability of memory. Painting in oil on discarded, recycled plastic sheets he produces ethereal, ghostly images that allude to the ephemeral nature of photographs in the digital age, as well as to the transitory nature of life itself. Through salvaged fragments of narrative his paintings question the very preservation of meaning.
