The Illingworth Kerr Gallery (IKG) and Alberta College of Art + Design invite you to attend Experiments in Public Art, a group exhibition presenting socially engaged ideas for public art developed by artists Dick Averns, Alana Bartol, Kevin Jesuino, Taryn Kneteman and anne drew potter. The artists have worked over a five month period in workshops led by internationally renowned artists Tania Bruguera, Jeanne van Heeswijk and Alfredo Jaar.

The Illingworth Kerr Gallery in partnership with The City of Calgary Public Art Program have developed a programme for regional artists with an interest in public art and social practice aiming at exploring different strategies and modalities of engagement in the public sphere. The programme saw the participation of three internationally recognized artists, Tania Bruguera, Jeanne van Heeswijk and Alfredo Jaar, who acted as mentors over a period of five months, delivered public talks on their respective practices and shared their experiences with Calgary’s community. The talks were open to the general public and designed so as to facilitate a broader and more inclusive conversation around public art looking in particular at innovative ideas and established traditions in the field of socially engaged practices.

The five regional artists, selected by competitive process, who took part in the workshop are: Dick Averns, Alana Bartol, Kevin Jesuino, Taryn Kneteman and anne drew potter.

This workshop series supported the participants in the following pursuits:

• Explored and developed a socially engaged practice with a distinct focus on public art.

• Understand the opportunities and the challenges that this type of practice entails.

• Discovered the breadth of possibilities that public art and social practice offers.

As a result of the workshop, each participant has developed an original proposal for public art in Calgary. These project proposals will be presented for the first time to the general public in the form of a group exhibition at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery opening on Wednesday, March 22nd at 5pm. Throughout the exhibition period visitors are invited to express their opinion on the projects and cast their vote in support of the proposal of their choice. The public vote will be accounted for during the selection process following the exhibition intending to realize one or more of the presented projects.
