fast & dirty presents: "Six Degrees"

PLATFORM is very excited to announce our next exhibition, fast & dirty presents: Six Degrees. The exhibition is guest curated by Jennifer Rae Forsyth and Kristen Hutchinson, the founders of fast & dirty. fast & dirty is an Edmonton based rotating collective of artists and curators that create exhibitions and art events of short duration focusing on unusual environments and projects that challenge curatorial methods.

For this exhibition, Forsyth and Hutchinson asked the board members and staff of PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts to recommend an artist from their local community who is an inspiration to them. They then contacted the artists selected by these initial respondents and asked them the same question and repeated this process for a total of six times. From these twelve threads of connectivity, they selected seven artists and one artist collective to participate in the exhibition. The exhibition will include a mapped out web of the linkages between the artists that led to the formation of the show.

Forsyth and Hutchinson purposefully did not ask for artist statements, bios, or resumes from the participating artists, nor did they research whether the artists are emerging, mid-career, or established - or have recently exhibited in Winnipeg. The curators' note:

"Over the past three years we have curated a number of exhibitions that addressed the notion of place. This emphasis developed out of threads in our own artistic practices and research. In previous exhibitions we had intentionally requested work that touched on this idea. For Six Degrees, we focused on placemaking as our method. What we found through this process was that the works submitted thematically represented a community. The works were chosen based on the process. When we narrowed down to the eight artists and one artist collective: Shawna Dempsey & Lorri Millan, Farrah Okolita, Divya Mehra, Larry Glawson, Daniel Barrow, Kevin Lee Burton, Ted Barker and Paul Robles, the exhibition emerged. We found that the artworks that we chose to exhibit tackled the theme of identity from a variety of different vantage points."

PLATFORM is very excited to present this unique group show. It welcomes artists who have never shown with the Centre before as well as artists with whom the gallery has supported throughout the years.
