Ferdinando Spina, "Short Crossing," no date
The Alberta Society of Artists is proud to present a solo exhibition featuring paintings, poems, and stories by Ferdinando Spina.
Fred Spina’s art does not portray subjects at their prettiest; being pretty is not the point. He tries to cultivate a milieu of ambiguity with characters that are in their intentions and motivations vague. The images in his exhibitions are sometimes more perfunctory, at the same time carry with them the baggage of quirkiness and idiosyncratic meanings and presentation. His description of the towns and hamlets strive to give a sensation of the place rather than a slavish depiction of buildings and roads. In so doing he keeps the image fresh and subtly changing with the passage of time. Fred uses the paintings as jumping off points to his poetry and short stories. It is important to note that these stories are not written in stone but are his interpretation at a moment in time. He is pleased when his paintings elicit ambiguity.
The exhibition runs November 1 – December 17, 2022, at the ASA Gallery, #222, 1235 – 26th Ave, SE, Calgary, Alberta. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
There will be an opening and book launch Friday, November 4th, 4-8 pm.
