Gabryel Harrison: After Every Winter, Soft Wind
Spring: a time for renewal and rebirth. It’s a poignant season—even more so one year into a global pandemic. Many people have taken time this past year to explore new possibilities, and for esteemed artist, Gabryel Harrison, creating her latest collection was a chance to take some risks in her artistic journey.
She said, “As an artist you’re always trying to take your work in a little bit of a new direction and I think this new direction in my work comes from, as we all are, navigating this pandemic, and a desire to step out of my comfort zone and make work that is more congruent with the fluidity of this time.”
Famed for her love of the natural world, Harrison’s new work is more experimental and abstract than her fans and aficionados have come to recognize, though her new collection still draws from Harrison’s signature inspiration.
She said, “What is incredibly anchoring about painting from the natural world is that it is always changing and yet at the same time it is a constant with the cyclical nature of the seasons. I love flowers and nature because they contain an abundant potential of life, and they are constantly being reabsorbed back into the ground. It’s about memory. It’s about loss, it’s about transience, it’s about strength; the force it takes for a flower to push itself out of darkness, I find that endlessly inspiring.”
The exhibition After Every Winter, A Soft Wind is open to the public and the Visualspace Gallery follows strict COVID-19 protocols.
