Some artists are like pilgrims who will spend years on a single path, refining and reiterating a particular idea in order to discover all of its permutations. Gary McMillan, however, is of that other type, the curious meanderer. He prefers to wander up the side paths and to see what lies hidden in the shrubs along the way. For him, it is worth exploring many places rather than exhausting the possibilities of just one.

“And Then This” is a review of Gary’s work of the last twelve years of art making. From his large figurative collage type paintings of the early 2010’s to his current small scale plein air landscapes, he has covered a lot of ground. Some side paths have taken him into strange territories populated by alien beings and others have brought him back home to familiar forms and faces. With a plunge into that and then a lunge into this, there is an ongoing search in his work for mystery and surprise. As an artist, Gary has the sensibility of an explorer, that is, to simply see the strangeness and beauty of life in as many ways as possible.
