Geoff Searle has been a potter and artist since 1972. From his studio in rural Fraser Valley, BC., he uses pit firing on all his sculpture and raku. They are all fired in the same way, yet they come out with different colours and patterns due to items such as straw, copper, iron and pine needles that are added into the firing. The combination of burnishing clay and firing in a ground pit is not a new idea. The method has been used for centuries but by adding organic materials and metals to the process, Geoff creates many unique, complex and exciting pieces.
