Artist Statement:
I left art school in 1969 and put down my brushes. Since then I have used an assortment of tools, various substrates and acrylic products. In 1976 I was introduced to Golden Artist Colors Inc., New Berlin, NY and the Custom Lab. Over the past 37 years they have formulated over twenty custom produces, which I have used to make my non-representational paintings. In 2006, I obtained samples of “multiple tone color travel paint”. This experimental product changes colour when viewed from different angles and light conditions. The incorporation of these colours into my studio practice expanded my colour palette and spawned a new series of paintings on sintra and Makrolon. In 2009 I returned to painting on canvas. This enables me to make larger paintings - some of which are featured in this exhibit.
- January 2017, Giuseppe Albi -
The Italian-born artist Giuseppe Albi, who has lived in Canada since 1951, is a dedicated member of the Edmonton art scene. After studying at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montréal, he moved to Amsterdam and then London, and finally returned to Edmonton in 1974. Albi has been working in the visual arts since the mid-sixties and has exhibited his creations regularly since the early-70s. He initially trained as a sculptor but made a career as an abstract painter whose works shift from acrylic on polystyrene and canvas to 3-dimensional objects made with innovative products. His work is the result of an extreme interest in experimenting with new materials, shapes and art forms, and in exploring the endless possibilities of colour. His creations have been exposed in solo exhibitions in New Westminster, Edinburgh, and Amsterdam and in Edmonton. Giuseppe Albi is represented in several private and public collections in North America, Europe and Australia.
