With a successful career lasting over 7 decades, Smith was an influential figure in promoting contemporary arts in Vancouver. This retrospective will feature work from different periods of his career and look at his changing aesthetic and practice.
This exhibition includes works from the 1940s through the 2010s and chronicles the artist's development and significant contribution to the arts in Canada.
As one of Canada's most prominent artists of the last half of the twentieth century Gordon Smith helped shape the modern and contemporary art scene in this province and across Canada. Madrona Gallery is pleased to host the first solo exhibition of Smith's work in this city since 1983. Throughout his career his works have been exhibited globally including the Sao Paulo Biennale, Canada Pavilion at World's Fair Osaka, Museum of Modern Art New York and many others. Within Canada he exhibited regularly from the 1950s onwards. He is the recipient of the Order of Canada, Order of B.C., Governor General's award, Audain Prize and numerous other accolades.
