Art Show and Sale by Rhoda Brodie-Smith
I was born in Nelson, British Columbia and alwasy saw detail as well as abstraction in nature. I delighted in colour and texture of all things. Spending a lot of my childhood outdoors, in the garden or the wilderness, I was a keen observer of the natural world.
My training in Ottawa as an Interior Designer included art classes from sculpture to painting and drawing. This stood me in a good stead and when retired, I started to paint every week with a friend here in Victoria. Over the years, I have tried different techniques and mediums for creativity including fabric art as well as creative quilting and painting. Currently, I concentrate on acrylic with mixed media and am starting to explore watercolour.
My art is one of discovery. Rationalization of abstract from, texture and colour is constantly in my mind as work progresses. Intuitively fitting the elements together so they give depth and compliment each other is a major part of the process. Occasionally there is a set idea from which I start and then proceed in an uninhibited way. Layer upon layer of texture, colour and form fascinate and excite me. Eventually a moment arrives and it flows to completion.
